Notes
- This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
- IMPORTANT!! Unlike my other patterns, this pattern is NOT worked in a continuous spiral. Instead, at the end of each round, you will slip stitch to close the round and then chain one to start the next round. This will help keep your pierogi/empanada more circular in shape and I find it really helps for adding the ruffle.
- I recommend using a stitch marker to keep track of each round (I place mine in the first stitch of each round so I know where to place my slip stitch at the end of the round).
- The finished size of this pattern is approximately 8” across and 4” tall when using the indicated yarn weight and hook size.
Materials
- Bernat Blanket Yarn in the color of your choice. I used Birch for the pierogi and Burnt Mustard for the empanada (I’ve also used Sand as well, but that color can be harder to source).
- 8mm hook
- 16mm safety eyes
- Fiberfill stuffing
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker
- Small amounts of black and pink yarn to embroider the face details
Abbreviations
- MR: magic ring
- R: round
- sc: single crochet
- sl st: slip stitch (into the first stitch of the round to close)
- ch: chain
- inc: increase
- BLO: back loops only
- dec: decrease
- FO: finish off
Pierogi/Empanada Pattern

- R5: (3sc, inc) x7 (35), sl st, ch 1
- R6: (4sc, inc) x7 (42), sl st, ch 1

- R8: (6sc, inc) x7 (56), sl st, ch 1
At this point, your project should look like Image 1.
Next, fold your project in half (Image 2) and crochet the sides together working in the back loops only (BLO) to create the ruffled edge.
- Ruffle: sl st the 1st BLOs together (Image 3)
- work 3 sc into the next set of BLOs. Continue placing 3 sc into the next 4 sets of BLOs.
- Insert eyes bet rounds 5-6 about 5 stitches apart. Add face details now or wait until the pierogi/empanada is complete (Image 4).
- Continue placing 3 sc in each set of BLOs until you have two back loops left on each side (Image 5). Stuff lightly as you go.
- sl st in the last two sets of BLOs and finish off. (I start and finish the ruffle with slip stitches so that the ruffles do not extend past the bottom of the pierogi/empanada so that they are nice and flat across the bottom).
- YAY! You’re all done!!
Make it mini!
Make a mini keychain size pierogi or empanada with worsted weight yarn. For this pierogi, I used Big Twist Value in Cream, a 4mm hook, and 6mm eyes.
NOTE: I used a lighter to melt and flatten the tips of the safety eyes after I attached the backing so that the safety eye post didn’t poke through the project.
